Astronomy Club

The Astronomy Club at the Department of Astronomy has been running since the autumn of 1900. It was founded by the world-renowned mathematician Acad. Kiril Popoff, the first doctor of astronomy in Bulgaria. Please note that sessions are held in Bulgarian.

History

The Astronomical Observatory of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” signifies the resurgence of culture, science, and education in the young Bulgarian state after its liberation. At the turn of the century, it became a significant accomplishment for both the University and growing Bulgarian science.

Instruments

The Large dome of the Observatory houses the first telescope in Bulgaria mounted on a permanent foundation – The 6-inch (152mm) refractor has a focal length of 2200mm and an equatorial mount. It was manufactured by the company “Grubb” and installed in the Large dome of the Observatory in 1897. For many years it was used for practices – during regular training of Astronomy students. It also contributed to scientific observations conducted in the first half of the 20th century.
